ADVISORY: Globalstar has informed its users that it will not re-attain normal performance until it successfully deploys its second generation satellite network, possibly in late 2009 or early 2010. Outfitter Satellite strongly recommends that existing Globalstar customers needing to use their phones for critical applications consider transitioning to Iridium or Inmarsat BGAN. Land based users in the lower 48 U.S. states needing to make only occasional short calls may still find their Globalstar phones suitable. Other users should check the current status report for more details.
GLOBALSTAR OVERVIEW: Globalstar uses Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to provide voice, 9600 bps data, and short message reception to over 250,000 subscribers in 120 countries. Globalstar uses "bent pipe" signal routing so that if one of the LEO satellites orbiting 878 miles above the earth can simultaneously see you and a Globalstar gateway, the call can be routed. Several small portable handset models are available for Globalstar users, including the new GSP-1700 by Qualcomm weighing just over 7 oz. Globalstar satellite phones can be provided with Texas, Florida, and Alaska phone numbers. A variety of accessories are available including docking stations for your car or boat, with varying cable lengths to the external antenna. There are also several models for use in fixed-site and marine applications where the user wishes to connect the Globalstar phone to a traditional analog phone or PBX.
