The Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD) Services network is billed on a per byte of data sent or received basis instead of a connection time basis. The maximum Mobile-Originated message length is 205 bytes and the Maximum Mobile-Terminated message length is 135 bytes. The Iridium 9601 SBD modem is intended for OEM applications such as vehicle tracking or SCADA monitoring. It does not use a SIM.

Significant recent improvements to the capacity and reliability of the SBD services network include:

Increase in message-processing software threads to better handle increased SBD demand
Improved processing time of message delivery
Greatly improved rate of Mobile Terminated queue recovery in the event of a hardware failure
50% increase in Busy Hour call capacity
Improved reliability of DirectIP Mobile Originated service by mitigating impact of DNS domain name lookup failures

ALTERNATE PRODUCT: The Iridium 9522A data modem is intended for OEM applications requiring either voice or asynchronous (dial-up) data. Service for the 9522A is billed on a per minute of connection time basis.
